About A Dubois
Anthony (Ewoud) Dubois was born in Bussum in 1950 and emigrated to Canada at the age of 2. He grew up in the Montreal area and frequently spent time painting and drawing as a boy and teenager. Alongside music and later the biological sciences, he continued to paint and draw in various media and styles until the end of high school.
After obtaining a university degree in biochemistry, he took the bold step of moving to Amsterdam to study medicine. Despite the fact that this offered limited opportunities to paint, the urge remained and Dubois started to paint again in the seventies. He had married in the meantime and returned to Canada, where he combined painting with medical research and training. Despite the demands his profession made on his time, he had an exhibition in this period and won a prize in a competition. He also had three of his works published.
On returning to the Netherlands, he settled in Groningen with his wife and two sons. He joined the staff of the University Medical Center Groningen, while continuing to paint and exhibit his works. Dubois: "Life without painting is unthinkable for me. Sometimes circumstances don't permit me to paint for a while, and then I just have to. This cycle fortunately repeats itself.
“In 2010 I had an experience which changed my artistic life: I saw Manet’s “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère” for the first time at the Courtauld Gallery in London. Even though I knew this work very well from reproductions, this did not prepare me for the impact of seeing the original. My style underwent a major change from symbolistic to more realistic. This has enabled me to communicate what I want to say even more directly and clearly than before.”
