Welcome to the site of A Dubois

The paintings on this site are a selection of works as they originated over time, with an emphasis on those from recent years. As will become apparent, the style of the earlier works is quite precise, and that of the later works more rugged. There is also a shift noticible from surrealistic elements early on to a from of symbolism later. Despite this development, there is a common theme apparent which binds the works together.

The pictorial elements used to make these works come from diverse sources both personal and public, often in combination. This allows for a large diversity of subject matter, generating more choices but also necessitating more decisions. The discipline of a focussed plan stands opposite the desire to explore the limits of what is possible, and both impulses must be present in the final painting. Order and tension must be in harmony.

It is perhaps remarkable in these times of conceptual art, performance art, and countless other stylistic trends and movements, that there are artists still engaged in making paintings in a realistic style. In recent years, these contrasting views have led to debate between the "museum circuit" and the "commercial circuit". Fortunately, the realisation is gaining ground that stylistic schools only originate in retrospect.

Looking ahead, anything is possible.
